The Up(do)s and Downs of Summer: At the Salon With PAPERMAG

In honor of today's warm weather and the upcoming holiday weekend, I thought I'd show you some hot looks for summer from my favorite NYC hair stylist, Davide Marinelli of De Berardinis salon.

BEACHY WAVES

big curls.jpgTo get my beachy waves Davide took one-inch pieces of my hair and wrapped them around a 1 1/2 inch barrel curling iron without closing the hair inside. (You can close the hair inside, but the look will be more "prom" than "beach.") Then he tousled it with his fingers and used some Oribe molding wax to roughen or "dirty" it up. Other products you can use to create texture are Bumble and bumble's hair powder (I use their "blondish" tint, but the powder also comes in brown, black and silver) and Rusk's Thickr Thickening Myst. It's inexpensive and it's a godsend for fine-haired girls like me!

MESSY BUN

messy bun.jpgIf it gets too hot outside you can easily put these waves on top of your head in a messy bun. Just collect all the hair with your fingers and put up in a loose high ponytail. Pull the ponytail tight to create the messy look then wrap the ponytail around the band. Put in four bobby pins at 12, 3, 6 and 9. According to Davide this is a third date look, but he said we should wear the waves down for a first date! Aye, aye, captain.

THE FISHTAIL BRAID

fishtail braid closeup.jpgAnother updo that we became very into after seeing it on the runway this season is the fishtail braid. It turns out the thicker, messier braid is easier to do than its cousin the french braid! You just separate your hair into two parts then take small strands from the far side of each part and cross over to the other part. We prefer to do this look on the side and then mess it up by teasing and scrunching. Davide didn't even use a ponytail holder to secure he just teased up the bottom with a comb and the knots secured it.

A TUCKED-UP BOB

bob!.jpgWhile on the subject of teasing you can also tease your whole head of hair and then tuck it up underneath with bobby pins you can have an instant bob just to change things up a bit for a fun summer party.

FINGER WAVES

curls!.jpg These are called finger waves. They are tighter curls than the beachy waves, made by closing the hair in the curling iron and curling all the hair in the same direction.

GLAMOUR WAVES

Cute couple alert: Me and my hair! Here's Davide and I with the look I decided to go with for the day/night.
